When off-the-shelf is the right answer (and we'll tell you so)

Custom software is a tool, not a religion. Some problems are perfectly solved by something you can buy this afternoon.

TL;DR

Email, payroll, accounting basics, video calls — buy them. Custom shines where your business is genuinely different from the next one. We'll talk you out of a build that doesn't fit.

Custom software is a tool, not a religion. Some problems are perfectly solved by something you can buy this afternoon, and the right answer is to buy it. We'll tell you when that's true.

Buy these

Email. Payroll. Accounting basics. Calendar. Video calls. File storage. Anything where every business in the world needs roughly the same thing — there's a great tool for it, it costs less than a developer's lunch, and rebuilding it is a vanity project.

If your problem is a problem every business has, the answer is on a shelf.

Build these

The thing that makes your business different from the next one. The way you take a customer from inquiry to delivered work — your specific version, with your specific handoffs and your specific rules. The dashboard that shows what your operators actually need to see.

If your problem is a you-problem, off-the-shelf will get 70% of the way and the last 30% will be expensive forever.

How to tell the difference

Ask: would I describe this problem to a friend the same way they would describe it back? If yes, buy. If you'd have to spend twenty minutes explaining the context first, build.

We've talked plenty of clients out of builds. It costs us a project; it earns the next three.
